Summary
An active military training centre and shooting range in Pazarić, Hadžići municipality, where years of firing have accumulated ammunition fragments and fine metal particles in the soil. Soil, deeper soil and sediment were tested. Lead, copper and zinc reached a level indicating a need for cleanup in the surface soil of the firing line, and in the deeper soil downslope below the range — together with lead, copper and zinc — cadmium as well. Several other metals were above the level at which soil is no longer considered clean, while pollutants associated with oil, solvents and industrial oils stayed within limits.

Findings of concern
- Lead, copper and zinc reached a level indicating a need for cleanup in the surface soil of the firing line and shooting area, where years of firing have accumulated ammunition fragments and fine metal particles.
- In the deeper soil downslope below the range, lead, copper, zinc and cadmium also reached a level indicating a need for cleanup, showing that the contamination has moved down the slope.
- Cadmium, cobalt, nickel and selenium were, in several places in the soil and sediment, above the level at which land is no longer considered clean, and one surface-soil sample also contained legacy pesticides from earlier use.
Positive findings
- Pollutants associated with oil, industrial solvents and industrial oils were within the prescribed limits in the soil and sediment, as were combustion-related compounds in nearly all samples.
- Chromium, arsenic and mercury were within the prescribed limits in the soil and sediment.
- The stream sediment was largely within the prescribed limits, apart from cadmium and selenium.
The project results have been submitted to the competent institutions as a basis for improving regulation and for strategic planning of further activities.
