Summary
An abandoned, unremediated municipal waste landfill near Kotor Varoš, formally out of use but still occasionally used for unauthorised dumping. Preliminary testing of soil, subsoil and water found selenium in the subsoil at a level indicating that cleanup is needed, along with several metals and pesticide residues above the level at which soil is no longer considered clean. The general conclusion of the report is that the location requires further detailed analysis.
Assessment findings
Findings of concern
- Selenium was found in the subsoil at a level indicating that cleanup is needed — the most serious finding at this location.
- Nickel was above the level at which soil is no longer considered clean in every soil and subsoil sample, as were cadmium and cobalt in several samples and copper in one.
- In one soil sample, residues of legacy pesticides were above that level.
- In the leachate draining from the landfill, manganese and lead were above the permitted discharge values.
- In the Vrbanja river, on the stretch closest to the landfill, lead and copper were above the level set for the cleanest category of water.
- The landfill has no stormwater drainage system, so rainfall can carry contamination toward groundwater and downstream toward the Vrbanja river.
Positive findings
- Apart from selenium, no other measured parameter in any medium reached the level indicating that cleanup is needed.
- Oil-related and combustion-related pollutants were within limits in every soil and subsoil sample.
- Lead, zinc and chromium were within limits in every soil and subsoil sample.
- Most of the pesticide residues tested were within limits.
- In the Vrbanja river most measured substances, including cadmium, nickel, chromium and oil-related pollutants, met the cleanest category of water.
